If one day you would like to tell people about your Macedonian origin, then probably is time to take a step forward, as you can legally confirm your link with the past – apply and acquire citizenship by a descend in Macedonia.

That is to say, if you feel the need to “reserve” your own place in the Registry of Citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia, you should get familiar with your rights for submission of an Application for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia.

Therefore, the truth is we all carry inside us, people who came before us!

But, let us start by considering the facts and everything you should know, in order to see whether you have a legal basis and if you are entitled to apply.

Namely, the Law on Citizenship, provides a legal mechanism through which, if you meet all conditions, you can prepare an application, go and apply – application for citizenship by a descend in Macedonia. 

At the beginning, a couple of basic things you should know are the following:

• You have legal opportunity to start with preparations, if you are an expatriate or if you are a child of an expatriate who lived on the territory of Macedonia.
• Keep in mind that preferable option is to present documents for your parents / grandparents or other old documents linked to your family.
• The age is not your limit! The number of years is not important, nor is the country in which you were born and live. If your are 18 or over 18, you are entitled to apply. If you have minor children, feel free to include them in your application!
• It doesn’t matter when you or your ancestors emigrated from Macedonia. By the Law, there is no specific deadline within which you must submit an application. If you have decided to apply,
  you should just pay attention to the conditions required by the law.

• You can live anywhere in the world and still become a Macedonian. The law does not oblige you to live in the Republic of North Macedonia, so you could apply.
• You do not need to get a release of the citizenships you currently hold, neither you have to master the Macedonian language. The whole process for acquisition of citizenship on the basis of expatriation provides a procedure for facilitated naturalization.

Present yourself as a good citizen of the country, which citizenship you hold at the moment!

• Most importantly, you should not forget to present a proper documentation for everything above stated!

  It should be noted that a large number of Macedonians who lived in the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia emigrated to different countries in the world. Nevertheless, their descendants never found the “right time” to come back or to obtain Macedonian civil status.
